Summary/Abstract: The central nucleus model (Abric 1976, 1994) enables us to account for a central and peripheral transformation of the social representation of the identity of settled gypsies. However, the representation of semi-nomadic gypsies only reveals a superficial evolution in the peripheral system. These results show the influence of new social practices and the perception as irreversible or reversible of a given situation (the settling process) on the change in social representation (Flament 1987, 1993). The procedure used to study social practices was participant observation and semi-directive interviews with a sample of 150 gypsies (settled and nomadic) in Perpignan, France. Representation was studied through a characterization questionnaire answered by a sample of 60 gypsies (30 settled and 30 nomadic).
