Summary/Abstract: The works of the two authors highlight the role played by the German intelligence service during the First World War, through a brief presentation of the head of this component structure of the Army General Staff and respectively the preparation of the offensive operation “Loyalty of Weapons” carried out by the forces German and Austro-Hungarian during the First World War, for the breakthrough of the Isonzo front, against the Italian forces. Starting from the question: “Who was actually Walter Nicolai – a dark man or a bureaucrat in uniform?”, the author presents the evolution and activity of the German intelligence service, which has supplemented both staff and attributions, through the takeover of the field of press and propaganda work, from the assumption of his leadership by Colonel Walter Nicolai in the spring of 1913 and until 1918 when he was fired for political reasons and removed from the process of active reconstruction of the service. The analysis of the German officer’s behavior concluded that a obtuse Prussian bureaucrat was at the head of the intelligence service. The German-AustroHungarian offensive “Weapon Loyalty” has demonstrated that, despite an initial only partially favorable situation and very difficult field conditions, through an efficient preparation of the actions, the setting of clear and precise objectives and the application of insurance measures well-planned combat, important field gains could be achieved, leading to a one third cut in front of the Alps, and causing serious loss of people and materials to Italian forces.
