The Multiple Functions of the Augmented Sixth Chord

Summary/Abstract: The augmented sixth chord has special value in the evolution and reconstruction of the tonal system. The chord's enharmonically flexible structure, which contains the dissonant augmented sixth and augmented fourth, creates the conditions for it to be interpreted in different ways. These complications are not included in the theoretical literature or the teaching of harmony in Bulgaria. This article researches and presents the augmented sixth chord as a specific harmonic phenomenon in the context of contemporary theory with a view to its application in music pedagogy.
