CHALLENGES IN TEACHING ESP

Summary/Abstract: The present paper aims to explore the main challenges in teaching English for Specific Purposes in technical faculties in Romania. Three main types of challenges were identified: institution related challenges, student related challenges and teacher related challenges. The first category includes classroom size and lack of homogeneity. The second type of challenges refers to students’ lack of interest in the discipline and their poor level of English. As far as the third category is concerned, the biggest challenge is the teacher’s lack of familiarity with the students’ specific disciplines and hence, the need to rely on their expertise, without causing them to become demotivated and disrespectful.
