Summary/Abstract: In order to describe the classic role of the intellectual, it is appropriate to start from the classic approach of Julien Benda, in particular the issue of the Treason of the Clerics, which makes it possible to grasp the positive contours of the intellectual. The intellectual is described there by his ethical attitude based on the ethos and spirit specific to his original activity, which ensure his legitimacy. But this ethical-intellectual attitude goes beyond these foundations, because it assumes societal responsibilities and the political and existential risks that go with it. The intellectual takes responsibility for certain problems and areas, which are not yet covered by specific functions or interest groups in society, thus giving a good example of his classic replacement function (to be specified later). // It is in this context, therefore, that one can examine the history and sociology of the intelligentsia in the period between 1968 and 1989.
