Summary/Abstract: The present paper deals with the loans of books for home reading by readers at the National Library, and more specifically with the so called institutional lending. Through the use of archival materials it traces the “reader–institution” relationship in Bulgaria's oldest library at the end of the 19 th and the beginning of the 20 th century. As a result, an overall picture is drawn that outlines the reading audience during that period and the functioning of the library itself in relation to readers' services.
