Summary/Abstract: Unchanged reproduction of a study published on pages 107–116 of issue 2 in the 39th volume of our journal. The precondition of Hungary's accession to the European Union was the establishment of a hierarchical system of territorial division, which in its structure and logic complies with the requirements of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS). The author summarizes the discussions on the delimitation of the 7 Hungarian planning-statistical regions and answers the following questions: how big should the region be; and why should the region be made up of counties. The study also examines differences in county development levels and changes in territorial support schemes within regions.
