Politics against Ethnicity. The Case of Rudari from Varna District

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to show that the ethnicity is dependent, in the cases of certain populations from the South-Eastern Europe, on the institutions and practices embedded at the local society level. In this regard, I will present the way of functioning of two important mechanisms of construction of the Rudari/Kopanari/Vretenari ethnicity, one of political nature, the Fatherland Party which defines itself as being the party of this ethnic group, and the other mechanism with the civic roots, namely the most important non-governmental association of the Rudari in Bulgaria, ERA. Finally at the end of the article I will face the impulses and fragmentary attempts to elaborate the Rudari ethnicity with the institutions and their local practices.
