Summary/Abstract: In addition to the most commonly observed effects of hearing loss in employees, noise in the work environment also masks sounds that are useful in the workplace. Another factor associated with the occurrence of noise that also makes it difficult to perceive useful sounds is the use of hearing protectors. It is therefore important to provide workers who use hearing protectors with an additional opportunity to perceive information about risks such as those associated with approaching vehicles. The article presents the work on solutions that are the basis for the development of a system to warn workers who use hearing protectors against collision with a vehicle. This work consisted in selecting and testing solutions that could potentially be used in this system. The first solution analyzed was a system that allows the reading of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) value indicating the power of the received radio signal and built, based on a Bluetooth class 2 device. Unfortunately, the distance for which the RSSI value changes in a way that is possible to use in the system is limited to a few meters. Another solution analyzed was the system operating on the principle of detecting the presence of the transmitter in the area around the employee. The tests showed that it is possible to detect the signal, in the open space, at speeds not greater than about 3 km/h. The third analyzed solution was a system in which the transmitter was built on the basis of Bluetooth class 1 device, providing greater power of radio signal. The tests indicated the possibility of correct assessment of the distance between the vehicle and the employee within the required range of distance. Therefore, it was decided that this solution will be further developed.
