The Genres of the Memory of Genres

Summary/Abstract: Michałowski reviews Grzegorz Grochowski’s Pamięć gatunków [The Memory of Genres], which gives an overview of modern and postmodern genre theories. Grochowski arranges them on a scale from those that accept genre studies and modify the system to those that negate the idea of genre and pronounce its demise. Studies on the qualities of the immanent structure of an utterance, Grochowski argues, give way to concepts based on communication, cognition, axiology and ideology. He focuses on the genres of narrative non-fiction, esp. historiography. Michałowski suggests that the argument should be broadened to include poetry; he points to overlooked contexts and the possibility of giving additional examples of the phenomena discussed by Grochowski.
