Adela S(ilberstein)? Identifying the Person Behind the First Polish Translation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Summary/Abstract: In 1910, the Warsaw-based publisher Michał Arct released the first Polish translation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. For many years this translation by Adela S. was thought to have been lost, and it has only recently drawn the attention of scholars. The translator, however, has not yet been identified. Adamczyk-Garbowska suggests that the pseudonym might stand for Adela Silberstein, a philosopher who wrote a pioneering study in aesthetics. Having outlined Silberstein’s life and work, Adamczyk-Garbowska offers a concise analysis of the translation. The reason why this innovative text failed to take root in the Polish literary polysystem, she suggests, may be that it diverged too far from the conventions of Polish children’s literature at the time.
