Summary/Abstract: Kurowicka asks what consequences the disappearance of sex and desire has in the vision of the future presented in Lidia Yuknavitch’s science fiction novel The Book of Joan. Drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of the heterosexual matrix and compulsory sexuality, Kurowicka discusses the disappearance of sex and gender characteristics and explores the relationship between sex, gender, desire and humanity. For Yuknavitch, these concepts mutually determine each other, so that sexual desire – and, ultimately, humanity – would not exist in a future without sex and gender. Kurowicka critiques the notion frequently found in queer theory and other pro-sex conceptual trends that sexuality and desire are related to political freedom and individual fulfilment.
