Summary/Abstract: Exploring differences in the communication of feelings in pre- and post-digital conditions, MacKinnon draws on the concept of discourse machines and differentiates between literary discourse and the computational discourse. She argues that literature was a cultural instrument for the internalisation of the power structure of love, which was essentially based on calculation, and that the algorithm-based computational regime of love is paradoxically less deterministic than the pre-digital one, which is defined by its unpredictability and indefiniteness. She points to the gradual transition from passively perceived media to contemporary participatory machines and describes their impact on contemporary human subjects before discussing digital techniques of love in contemporary cinematography.
