In Search of Understanding: Ewa Winnicka’s Reportage

Summary/Abstract: We live in times of “fake news,” marked by a progressive degradation of the social role of journalism and by the use of reportage as a convention to create a substitute reality, e.g. in television pseudo-documentaries. This makes the work of reportage writers who have a deontological approach all the more valuable. Their sincerity and honesty towards the audience are increasingly precious because we need unfalsified stories about ourselves. Piechota explores the methods that Ewa Winnicka applies in her reflective and socially relevant reportage work. This study is based on the assumption that a transference takes place in the creative act of developing factual material: the referential description is transferred to the level of symbolic meaning, so that a literary reportage becomes a “human document”.
