Summary/Abstract: Held responsible for the highest rate of morbidity and mortality in European Union, heroin is one of the most abused drugs in Romania. In legal terms, Romanian law does not provide for any distinction between “heroin” and “diacetylmorphine”, but traffickers know how to “make the difference”. Illegally-synthetized heroin is a mixture of chemical compounds, where diacetylmorphine is less than 60%. All along the dealers network, the percentage of diacetylmorphine continously decreases to less than 10% as much as the heroin is cut with adulterants (caffeine, paracetamol) and/or diluents (glucose, lactose).]
