Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the individual within the dystopic world of 1984 and the role of language in establishing an ideal society (overturned in dystopic fiction). Following the theorization of the genres of utopia and dystopia, it explores fundamental issues: 1. utopias and dystopias created by mankind for mankind, 2. logocentrism: Big Brother, 3. Language, identity and the eradication of the past. This analytic and comparative study amalgamates the close reading of 1984 with theoretical and critical scholarship on dystopic writing and Orwell’s literary oeuvre. The results initially emphasize the general transformation of utopias into dystopias throughout the unattainability of an idealized social order, after which the tendency towards logocentrism (centers such as Big Brother) is emphasized, and lastly, the results argue that human understanding can be impaired through the pejorative manipulation of language. This paper adds to the vast discussion on the significance of literary creation.
