Representation of ’Foreigners’ in the novels "Dead Souls" and "The General of the Dead Army"

Summary/Abstract: Many scholars since the 19th century have dealt with the issue and definition of what is now known as comparative literature or comparatistics. From several concepts offered in this field of study in literature, the French and American schools of comparatistics are the most renowned. Regardless of their beliefs and postulates about this field, the contribution of these two schools in comparing works in languages and literatures worldwide is undeniable. Since thematology is one of the main focuses of comparative studies, a theme often encountered in literary works from various countries is that of foreign characters. This topic is precisely the treatment of this paper which aims to highlight the similarities and differences between the ‘foreigners’ that two authors of different periods and cultures, such as Gogol and Kadare, have presented in their masterpieces, “Dead Souls” and “The General of the Dead Army”. In addition to the linguistic, semantic, and conceptual analysis, this paper reveals the similarities and differences between the ‘foreign’ protagonists (Chichikov, the General, and the Priest) in the abovementioned works. Finally, similar treatments of this theme in English, American and French works of literature are also discussed.
