Summary/Abstract: This study analyzes the beginning of the process of medical institutionalization in Wallachia and Moldavia (and, from 1859 onwards, in Romania) starting with the third decade of the 19th century until 1874. The process involves the foundation of a medical-sanitary system organized and financially supported by the state, meant to supervise the public health and several therapeutic, research and educational institutions (hospitals, clinics and medical laboratories, educational and medical research institutions, medical specialists – doctors, surgeons, nurses, midwives –, the medical press, societies and professional associations).
