Summary/Abstract: The Salesian Sisters arrived in Łódź at the invitation of Bishop Ordinary Wincenty Tymieniecki in 1930 in order to run “Orphanage of Bałuty” which was opened in 1909. Up until 1939, the Sisters organized and ran: the kindergarten at Franciszkańska Street 85, one-year sewing courses, secondary vocational and comprehensive schools, an oratory, youth associations, individual pastoral care, organizations for adults, summer camps and a kitchen for the unemployed. This paper presents the history (as well as organization, teaching staff and students) of the Vocational Clothing School ran by the Salesian Sisters from Łódź until its liquidation in 1963. The Salesian Sisters School was the last one of the closed and liquidated private schools in Łódź after the Second World War. The liquidation of this institution was closely connected with the generally accepted policy of the state towards religious orders. The authorities tried to eliminate religious orders’ influence on the education of young people. Therefore, the Salesian Sisters School met with various forms of harassment and repression from the local authorities, supported by the section responsible for fighting with the Church in the Security Service (in Polish: UB/SB). The most difficult time for the school was the Stalinist period (1949–1955). The school was finally closed in 1963 during the another action of the liquidation of private Catholic schools, the action undertaken by the communist authorities in the years 1958-1963. It was not until 1989 that the Salesian Sisters from Łódź could resume their educational work. They opened the Care and Education Centre, comprising a kindergarten, a day-care room, and a children’s home.
