Summary/Abstract: Apart from one or two exceptional medieval fragments of frescoes, the earliest paintings associated with the Catholic Church in the former southern part of Hungary represent the devotional pictures of Virgin Mary that originated from the end of the 17th century to the second decade of the 19th century. This study lists them without ambition to record them all, discuss their history, iconography, legends related to them, as well as their stylistic characteristics. The appearance of devotional pictures is a consequence of the care of monastic orders for believers, especially the Franciscans. The names of the masters are generally unknown, but we were able to identify some of the authors. Most devotional pictures in Vojvodina are replicas of well-known European religious paintings, whose cults were most often of local significance. As one of the exceptions we must mention the Virgin Mary of Tekya to whom worshipers made a pilgrimage seeking help even from distant parts of the country
