Summary/Abstract: A multitude of declassified CIA documents is now at the disposal of researchers on the website of the Central Intelligence Agency (https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/home), which has been brought about according to the provisions of the American Freedom of Information Act, and is accessible to anyone interested. The majority of sources have been online since the end of 2016 (some of them even earlier); nevertheless, Hungarian (and international) historiography has not yet engaged much in their study. This paper attempts to make an introduction to reading such documents: after a brief outline of the historiographical and methodological context, it presents the usefulness of such an analysis based on highly selected images of Novi Sad and valuable from an intelligence point of view. This text reveals what kind of data the CIA had access to, and the sort of knowledge construction it created for the Western decision-makers at the beginning of the Cold War, in the period full of conflicts.
