THE EFFECT OF MARRIAGE COUNSELING PROGRAM DEVELOPED BASED ON STRUCTURAL FAMILY SYSTEMS APPROACH TO MARITAL ADJUSTMENT OF COUPLES

Summary/Abstract: In this study, the effect of marriage counseling program developed based on Structural Family Systems Approach on the marital adjustment of couples with severe mentally handicapped children was examined. Experimental design with pretest-posttest control group is used in the research. The study group consists of 16 couples with severe mentally handicapped children. A married counseling program based on the Structural Family Systems Approach consisting of ten sessions was applied to the married couples in the experimental group. Before and after the application, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale was used to measure the marital adjustment of the couples and the personal information form prepared by the researcher was used to determine the demographic characteristics of the couples in the study. In the analysis of the obtained data, t-test was used in independent groups and t-test was used in dependent groups. SPSS 18.0 software was used for data analysis. The findings showed that the marital counseling program developed based on the Structural Family Systems Approach increased the marital adjustment of couples with severe mentally retarded children and the similar effect continued in follow up test as well. The findings obtained from the study were interpreted within the related literature. As a result, it can be said that the marriage counseling program based on the Structural Family Systems Approach can be used to increase the marital adjustment of couples with severe mentally handicapped children.
