Summary/Abstract: Abstract. The demand for autonomy is a leitmotif in the Sandžak region. During the 1990s, this project was persistently advocated by the Party of Democratic Action in Serbia and in Montenegro. This study examines the evolution of the concept and the goals of the Bosniak political elite in the course of the Milošević era. Furthermore, the analysis provides an overview of autonomist strivings in Sandžak following the ‘bulldozer revolution’. I try to demonstrate that the project was ethnic and not civic. Also, the study will att empt to show that the Bosniaks in both parts of the Sandžak had diff erent priorities and political goals.
