Summary/Abstract: The article deals with issues connected with the development of social science. As the so called pioneers of social science among others Ibn Chaldun, F. Bacon, J. Graunt, W. Petty, H. Conring, G. Achenwall, A.L. Schlözer, T.R. Malthus, J.P. Süßmilch and L.A.J. Quetelet were mentioned. Their works influenced to a large degree the future of social science. The article stresses the importance of understanding the mutual relationship between science and the economic, politic and social situation of society. Much attention was also paid to the interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary nature of scientific inquiry
