Summary/Abstract: In the 1920s, Władysław Stanisław Reymont’s novel Chłopi was originally published. Shortly afterwards, the author received the Nobel Prize for Literature and the book was translated into a number of languages, including Yiddish. The translation by Szlojme Rozenberg, published in Warsaw as Pojern: Epopej in fir bender, is an excellent material for comparative studies. Based on an analysis of the Jewish edition of The Peasants, it is possible to refresh the historic perspective of analysing the Polish-Jewish intercultural contacts, specifically the ways in which the culture of the Polish countryside could be translated into Yiddish and made accessible to Jewish audiences. This article looks at Rozenberg’s translation skills and is an attempt at evaluating the product of his work based on a prior analysis. The author uses the terminology first used by Lawrence Venutti and the texts of other translation students. In the first part, based on the interwar press, it portrays Władysław Reymont and Szlojme Rozenberg, as well as the background for the birth of both versions of the novel. The next part is an analysis of the Yiddish translation, with the information divided into three groups: rural life, the peasants’ language and customs; their faith and the related vocabulary, prayers and hymns; a picture of the Jews and their relations with other villagers. To this end, the author used examples selected from both texts, juxtaposing them and commenting on them.
