Summary/Abstract: Ioan Şeu was born on September 11, year of 1940, at Nicula village in Cluj County. Since 1980 he is an active member at the Union of Fine Artists in Romania and dedicated to the profession of sculptor. He presents to the public numerous personal exhibitions in Deva, Hunedoara, Arad, Sibiu, Craiova, but he also participates with works in collective exhibitions in the country and abroad, like: Bucharest, Reşiţa, Târgu-Jiu or in Germany, Finland, etc. His sculptures can be found in private collections and in museums in the country and abroad: Italy, France, USA, Germany, Hungary, Syria. He also created public monuments: Metallurgy Monument – (collectively) Hunedoara, 1970; Heroes of the Age – bronze, Deva, 1992; Christ – marble, Arad, 1995; Nicolae Densuşianu – marble bust, Densuş, 2002; Nadia Comăneci – bronze bust, Deva, 2002; The Monument from Tărtăria, 2003; Paulo Dimo – marble bust, Bucharest, 2004; Gimnasts Alley – 15 busts - bronze portraits, Deva, 2007. Ioan Şeu has done paintings, graphics, glass, porcelain and countless sculptures in metal, wood, stone and many of them are part of the museum collections inside our country but, also abroad.At the museum, in Deva, we find him with works such as sculptural portraits as: Girl’s head (wood, Pl. I/1), Woman (wood, Pl. I/4), Irinel (granite, Pl. I/2), Simona (stone, Pl. I/3), Peace (stone, Pl. II/1) and stylized sculptures, such as: Woman’s head (wood, Pl. III/1), Revolted man (wood, Pl. II/3), Detachment (wood, Pl. II/2), Composition with figures (wood, Pl. III/2), Bird of the earth (marble, Pl. III/3), The evil star (marble, Pl. II/4).These works are portraits of small sizes, executed in rondebosse, in different materials. Most of these portraits are individualized busts. Studing with such passion female portraits, we find the attempt of psychoanalysis. The study of human physiognomy is an unlimited insight, like the shadow-light game, the sculptor tries to capture the different states and mimics of the model. The artist strives to represent the human figure with great clarity, digging deep in order to capture hidden mysteries that could clarify the truths of human beeing. In conclusion, the portraiture of Ioan Şeu, tries to decode this unknown secret, hidden behind the physiognomic features of the model.
