Summary/Abstract: Józef Hoene-Wroński (1776–1853) is an unjustly forgotten figure in the view of the enourmousness of his undertaking, which include the number of his philosophical and mathematical works, designs of inventions, as well as his project of historiosophy. The knowledge of his oeuvre of an averagely educated Pole is scarce. For this reason, it seems fair to recall the thinker and his output, based on what has been written and published on him up till the present, including secondary literature and a selection of texts of his own authorship. In some aspects it is characteristic for the research on all Polish philosophical thought. Hoene-Wroński, however, met with extraordinarily varied assessments and it is worth examining the argumentation used by his critics. The present paper concerns several issues, the most important of which is his historiosophy. In order to discuss it, however, some general remarks on his ‘absolute philosophy’ are indispensable. Apart from the Introduction and the Résumé, the article consists of four parts, pertaining to the following questions: (1) Was Hoene-Wroński a Polish philosopher? (2) Was he a brilliant philosopher and inventor or rather charlatan and fraud? What was the source of emotions evoked by his works and his life choices? (3) The third and the most important question concerns the historiosophy of Hoene-Wroński. There are good reasons to believe that he had an impact on the views of other prominent thinkers of Polish Romanticism. The last part (4) is dedicated to the present state of research on the subject.
