Summary/Abstract: The article presents the ‘pioneer decade’ – the first ten years of the Piarists presence in the Greater Poland town of Wieluń. So far unused mauscript sources accumulated in Archivio Generale delle Scuole Pie in Rome provided the basis for the explanation of many significant issues concerning the collegium and allowed for the correction of false opinions present in to-date publications. The foundation occured in 1691, the Piarists’ main benefactors being Katarzyna of Niezabitowski and Wojciech Kazimierz Urbański, the castellans of Wieluń. This led to the identification and presentation of the figures of more than thirty religious fathers and brothers who spent time in the friary at the end of 17th century. Special significance was given to the subsequent principals: Wojciech Siewierkiewicz, Hipolit Doruchowski, Aleksy Magnuszewski and Kamil Jodłowski. There was also a description of the friars’ difficulties, resulting not only from the natural circumstances of creating and organizing a new institution.
