Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to interpret the genre of alternative history, more broadly the whole of speculative fiction, from the point of view of literary canons and contemporary postmodern literary strategies. The work discusses the transformation of the position of speculative fiction from the points of view of both English and Hungarian reception as well as it points out those parallels of world and art schools of thought which stand between the postmodern and the alternative history/speculative fiction literature. It also deals with the interdisciplinary and vitalist connections of the mentioned parallels, through which it would be reasonable to make them essential parts of present day literary education.
