Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to discuss the membership process of North Macedonia (formerly Republic of Macedonia) to the European Union on the basis of the name dispute with Greece since its declaration of independence in 1991. Northern Macedonia became a candidate country for EU membership in 2005. However, because of its constitutional name, it went through a dispute which would last around 27 years with its neighbouring country Greece. In this study, initially the causes and historical dimension of the name dispute and then the solution process leading to the Prespa Agreement are discussed.
