Functions of private insurance and sustainable development

Summary/Abstract: Societies today make efforts to achieve goals of sustainable development. Members of different levels of economic system take into account environmental and social issues in business processes. This study, on the one hand, presents insurance sector entities as co-creators of sustainable development. The functions of commercial insurance (protective, preventive) and the long term perspective of insurance operations allow creating permanent and sustainable attitudes of the insured and insurance seekers. The direction of insurance investments in turn determines or can determine the supply of capital for environmental and social performances. On the other hand, insurance companies are shown as entities significantly exposed to sustainability risk in multiple areas of their activity. The insurance sector can therefore be one of the key beneficiaries of sustainable economy in the long term.
