Summary/Abstract: The various editions, reissues and reprints of Ivan Vazov's novel “Under the Yoke” over a period of 125 years, albeit mosaically, make it possible to trace the changes in publishing practices that have taken place under the influence of the market. The analysis is based on the most interesting transformations in the various editions, which provoked lively discussions and waves of indignation. Emphasis is placed on them as a publishing fact: at one end of the value scale is the canonization of the novel and its enduring significance for Bulgarian literature, and at the other – disturbing editions that replace Vazov's text. The novel also has different symbolic value in different types of editions, which raises questions about the professionalism of the publishers, their priorities and their position as to what publishing is – a business or business with a cultural mission.
