Summary/Abstract: The current account deficit creates an obstacle for Turkey against the goal to achieve a more stable economic structure and a higher economic growth rates. The current account deficit and its ratio to gross domestic product (GDP) deficit tended to decline after 2010, but it still continues to be a serious problem. The causes and economic consequences of the current account deficits of Turkey were examined in this study. Dependency on foreign trade in energy, intermediate and capital goods is noteworthy as the important causes of the deficit. On the other hand, the low savings and the exchange rate policies were also played a role on the current account deficit problem. New energy planning for nuclear energy and renewable energy sources, which will reduce the dependence on foreign sources in energy, can have a significant impact on the solution of the current deficit. Giving more importance to products with higher value added in exports and increasing product and market diversity in export are other important issues in decreasing the current account deficit. The Private Pension System (PPS), which was introduced by the government to increase savings, would also reduce the current account deficit in the medium term.
