Summary/Abstract: In many respects, we seem to be facing a virus that challenges how things stand in our world in all spheres of human and social life. We believe that it calls for a cosmopolitan response concerning what we can and should do to in order to respond responsibly to the outbreak, but also with regard to other risks forced upon us that do not stop at national borders because of their global origin, spreading and impact. It is, however, clear that some people respond to the outbreak by denying it, and some by urging us to go back to earlier ways of life as if global interconnectivity and interdependence were superficial and effortlessly reversible traits of society and as if nothing of weight has happened in recent processes of modernisation.
