Summary/Abstract: The paper reconstructs the research stages that led to the definition of three archaeological cultures, documented in Romania, as well as in the wider eastern and central-European area. These are, in chronological order, Cernavoda I, Cernavoda III and Cernavoda II. The aim of this paper is to point out the main stages that led to defining different material culture with unusual and even unique names. Furthermore, I want to name several researchers from different European countries that tied their name to the Cernavoda prehistoric sites.
