Summary/Abstract: The present article analyses the need for written communication through cases involving individuals. Since this need was essential one aimed at getting or issuing charters, the author begins by defining the conception of the charter itself; she regards, following the definition of István Szabó, as charters all documents granting authority or rights, with no regard to their outward form. The initiators of written communication were persons mediating between authorities and communities. The sources on such proceedings of the common people call the individuals concerned by name from the beginning of the 13th century on. There is no information on the problem why certain people were cast in the role or took on the role of mediators and initiators.
