Summary/Abstract: The author discusses some questions on the transformation of Roman identity in the south-eastern Alps and the neighbouring regions, which in late Antiquity represented an area of constant transition. How people dealt with quickly changing powers is an important point of view in the identity discourse, not so much the identity of an individual, but of a population. In the discussed territory it seems Roman identity, such as it was, gradually became something we read as mostly Mediterranean and Christian. It probably goes beyond the kingdoms that followed Rome and most probably even beyond strict ‘Roman-ness’.
