Geopolitical Importance of Distances - The American Intervention in Syria

Summary/Abstract: On the international arena, distances play an important role and very often they have a decisive impact on the outcomes of the inter‑national events. Such an impact of distances is also on the budget that states allocate for overseas operations. Despite the globalization process that makes distances irrelevant due to the technological innovations, long distances still lead to increasingly consistent budgetary allocations and military expenditure. Based on this hypothesis, this paper examines how American operations in Syria and the sustained military effort have influenced the budget allocation for defence in the past years. In order to provide a comparable example, the budget allocated by the Russian Federation for defence will also be analysed. This method is appropriate because both states have a consistent military presence in Syria.
