Summary/Abstract: In this paper we explore social media monitoring. In the beginning with compare automated internet monitoring with manual tracking of on-line opinions about brand, product or service and present 7 advantages of using market-available tools for social media monitoring. We introduce different applications of social media monitoring and present a set of rules for a proper hashtag design to increase the effectiveness of the monitoring process. Finally, in a case study of “Blue Monday” phenomenon we present example findings and describe a lexicon-based sentiment analysis algorithm.
