Summary/Abstract: This article is reflecting the core of the book I’ve written with Greg Simons for Routledge, to appear in July, on the characteristics of the 21-st Century wars. It has been conceived and written as the result of a number of years of working with the subjects of security, mass media, politics and armed conflict. The elements of communication and politics inform much of the content and the cases we are referring to. These aspects and the resulting issues have been carefully considered and engaged in offering important results from an academic and a practical perspective.War and the manner in which it is waged have been evolving gradually, something that has been noticed by several authors, which prompted the motivation to capture the whys, to what extent, the how and the results of those changes (presumed and real). Some of those changes are related to how the public view, perceive and relate to wars and armed conflicts. After the triumph of the end of the Cold War, the world breathed a sigh of relief after living on the brink for decades, and the “end of history” was announced. However, currently this short-lived optimism seems to be on the wane as new sets of risks and security challenges evolve and emerge. When wars break out, there are distinct parts to it – the physical fighting that takes place on the battlefield and the informational part that takes place in living rooms across the globe.
