Summary/Abstract: Slime molds are inconspicuous organisms that evolved at least half a billion years ago, but were not classified by biologists until the 20th century. Their peculiar morphology and reproductive cycle have made them a popular subject of research on emergence, cell aggregation and self-organizing systems. In this article, I examine this research and the assumptions on which it is based, trying to trace how a slime mold affects modern ways of thinking about what is social.
