Summary/Abstract: The sudden death of top state officials in the Smolensk disaster disturbed the social order, creating the need to make sense of the tragedy and bring order into a fractured world. Smolensk poetry played an important role in shaping the Smolensk myth based on Romantic victimization. Through these optics, Smolensk poems can be read as a kind of rite whose function is to reorganize the broken social and symbolic reality. This article attempts to analyze the properties of this myth and trace the sacrificial motifs in selected Smolensk poems.
