Summary/Abstract: Objective: The purpose of the article is to present dilemmas that appear in the course of research on the effectiveness of organisations and approaches to measuring the effectiveness of organisations used in research proceedings. Research Design & Methods: The research was based on an analysis of the literature, including 13 studies (some in Polish, some in English) on effectiveness. Findings: The literature analysis leads to the conclusion that in research on organisational effectiveness, it is reasonable to adopt subjective measures which make it possible to compare the results of enterprises operating in various industries and reduce the need to present sensitive objective data. Implications / Recommendations: The ongoing considerations on the effectiveness of an organisation, both in the Polish and in the foreign scientific community, go beyond the simple assessment and comparison of the relations of effects to expenditures. The article indicates three main categories of dilemmas that appear in research on the effectiveness of an organisation: dilemmas of a definitive nature, dilemmas related to the choice of an organisation’s effectiveness assessment perspective, and dilemmas of choosing the appropriate measures to assess the effectiveness of an organisation. Contribution: An attempt to order and outline directions of research on the issue of organisational effectiveness.
