Summary/Abstract: In the literature, the concept of civil society is understood in two meanings: as an ideal norm and as a certain social reality. J. Mariański points out that in the first sense civil society is perceived as “a certain ideal value and norm of a specific social order according to which real societies are assessed”. Civil society in the second sense corresponds to what, remaining outside the structures of state institutions, finds expression in the grassroots initiative of ordinary citizens. It covers various forms of organized civic activity in the form of associations, charities, foundations, councils, committees, voluntary movements of social cooperatives, etc.The basic condition for building a civil society is respect for the dignity of the person, strengthening of civic spiritual attitude, the need and ability to engage, solving social and civic problems, the ability to group civic activity for civil, political and social rights, a conviction of the validity and readiness of civic virtues realization. In the context above, a basic question arises: what is the place and function of the school in building civil society? In the presented material, an attempt will be made to determine the place of the school in civil society understood as a social fact and to determine the function that the school can / should fulfill to prepare young people to build a civil society.
