Summary/Abstract: The citizenship of the European Union has several dimensions. In addition to its legal dimension, it is certainly possible to consider it from the economic perspective associated mainly with the freedom of movement based on economic grounds. The European citizenship and related rights on free movement were enshrined in the Maastricht Treaty that also anchored gradual progress towards economic and monetary union and also deepened the cooperation in terms of the internal market. The conviction that the so-called four freedoms – the free movement of persons, goods, services and capital will contribute to the strengthening of the European economy is derived from the theory of optimum currency areas. Since 2008, this theory has been increasingly mentioned in relation to the single currency and its sustainability. It provides especially interesting conclusions when it comes to the future of the European Monetary Union. This contribution looks at the citizenship of the European Union from the perspective of economic theory and outlines the potential consequences of enhanced economic cooperation within the European Monetary Union for the citizens. Union for the citizens.
