Summary/Abstract: The study explores the range of possible utilisation of word-formation cluster in developing lexical competence of the child of preschool age. The author, in the theoretical part of the study, analyses relations of word-formative processes and lexical development in children. The empirical part of the study presents the results of qualitative research whose aim was to determine the ability of preschool children to make verbal associations within the word-formation cluster. The research results indicate a significant influence of meaningful learning on the extent and quality of pre-schoolers’ vocabulary. Based on the research findings the author recommends to exploit word-formation activities as an effective ways of expanding children’s vocabulary and developing his/her communicative competence in kindergarten.
