Summary/Abstract: The present text, presented as a festive lecture on December 7, 2011 during the ceremony of awarding the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, brings into discussion the issue of the Romanian village. There is a deep sensitivity of the Transylvanians towards the significance of the Romanian village in the history of the Romanian people, as it can be seen, for example, in the works of poets and prose writers such as George Coşbuc, Octavian Goga, Lucian Blaga and Liviu Rebreanu. The author notes the precarious and uncertain state of the Romanian village starting with the era of communist collectivization, industrialization and urbanization and continuing with the phenomenon of emigration abroad in the period following 1990. The dramatic situation of today’s Romanian village is also painfully perceived by the Church because the Romanian Orthodox priests in rural areas feel that the Romanian village is aging rapidly, the number of baptisms and weddings is decreasing, while the number of deaths and burials is increasing, and people are becoming poorer.
