Summary/Abstract: Research on the creative class and its impact on regional development (in particular the development of the creative industry) in Poland is relatively new and has not yet allowed for conclusions. The author describes the theory of Richard Florida's creative class and its impact on theperception of regional development (especially urban development). Subsequently, the foundationof the creative sector, namely sector focusing on manufacturing activity involving intellectualproperty. According to the British classification of DCIM creative sector includes activities relating to advertising, architecture, art and commercial art trade, handicraft art, design (utility andinterior), fashion design, film and photography, software, music and visual arts, publishing, television and radio. On the basis of comparison of DCIM to Polish PKD (Polish Codes of businessactivity) the number of entities belonging to the creative sector in the Podkarpackie region waspresented. Then, based on the number of persons employed in these companies number of peoplebelonging to the creative class in the region was estimated. Studies carried out in this way are subject tomany errors. Firstly, the researcher can't be sure that all entities that can be assigned to the creative sectorshowed an adequate number of PKD, and vice versa, some companies could belong to that sector didnot demonstrate this code. Secondly, the investigator can't estimate what proportion of employees ina company belonging to the sector are truly creative individuals. Regardless of these methodologicalshortcomings it can be seen that the creative sector (and also the creative class) is developing in podkarpackie voivodship, the number of business entities and their employees is systematically growing. There is a strong need for further research on the structure of the class and industry in theregion and to conduct comparative studies with similar territorial units.
