Development Opportunities of the Polish-Slovakian Cross-Border Area

Summary/Abstract: Cross-border regions of the European Union are regarded as problem areas. They are typically characterized by low rates of socio-economic development which are caused by complex territorial conditioning and specificity. One of such regions is the Polish-Slovakian border area with itsvarious natural limitations imposed by the Eastern Carpathian location. The issue of decreasingperipherality of border regions is addressed by a variety of the EU pro-development cross-bordercooperation programs. They also comply with the overriding objective of increasing territorial,social and economic cohesion of the European Union. The main goal of the paper is to determinethe development opportunities – in the context of socio-economic changes of the cross-borderareas of the podkarpackie voivodship which due to its environmental uniqueness necessitatesidentification of their competitiveness and sustainable development enhancement policy tools. Thelong lasting effects of the programs can be ensured by cooperation among various local communities and taking advantage of the full potential of the regional resources
