Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to synthesize information on the history, developmentand tasks of engineering troops in preparation for World War II. The author’sconsiderations begin with an introduction regarding the very beginnings of thesapper service. Much of the text is devoted to the interwar period. In the descriptionthe reader can find information on repeated reorganization of the sapperservice in the first years of independence as well as data on education. From thearticle you can also find out what sappers did during the period of peace and whatthe tasks of engineering troops during armed conflicts were. The author’s considerationsare supplemented by descriptions of fortification builders’ divagations onvarious concepts of strengthening the borders of the Second Polish Republic.There is no shortage of descriptions of specific tools used for field work and thecharacteristics of fortifications. The text clearly emphasizes the importance ofnatural environment in the context of warfare, as well as the importance of wargeography as a whole. Finally, the author points out that sappers have alwaysbeen a very important type of troops.
